The Lives of Christopher Chant by StarMasayume The Lives of Christopher Chant by StarMasayume
.....................................................

"But this year," he said, "we have had reports of the most appalling weapons that the Wraith is bringing in from Series One, each one capable of destroying the strongest enchanter, and we still cannot lay hands on the gang." Here, to Christopher's dismay, Gabriel turned his eyes down on him. "You see what mischief your careless climbing could do? While we rush around the Castle on your account, we could miss our one chance of catching this gang. You should learn to think of others, Christopher."

"I do," Christopher said bitterly, "but none of you think of me. When most people die, they don't get told off for it."

"Go down to the library," said Gabriel, "and write one hundred times 'I must look before I leap.' And kindly shut the door when you leave."

Christopher went to the door and opened it, but he did not shut it. He left it swinging so that Gabriel would hear what he said as he went towards the pink marble staircase. "I must be the only person in the world," he called out, "EVER to be punished for breaking my neck!"

"Wong," agreed Throgmorten, who was waiting for him on the landing.

Christopher did not see Throgmorten in time. He tripped over him and went crashing and sliding the whole way down the staircase. As he went he could hear Throgmorten wailing again. Oh no! he thought. When his next life took over, he was lying on his back near the pentacle in the hall, looking up into the glass dome...

- Diana Wynne Jones "The Lives of Christopher Chant"

.....................................................

Inspired by seeing Claparo-Sans 's gorgeous pencil work I've been in the mood to try my hand at it. Of course I fail in comparison, but I'm still overall pleased. The picture in my head came out very well.

Now I must sing and shout my adoration for this book. It's my second time reading it. The author is Diana Wynne Jones, the same author as Howl's Moving Castle (and if you read that, then there's no need to tell what a wonderful writer she is). The Chonicles of Chrestomanci series is my next favorite by her, and I must say I enjoy them as much as I did Harry Potter. The first two stories, Charmed Life, and the prequal, The Lives of Christopher Chant are my favorites.

Chrestomanci is a role appointed in one of the worlds in series twelve that revolves around magic. Only a rare 9-lifed enchanter is strong enough for the post as his main duty is to keep all the other witches, warlocks, and such from abusing their abilities. He is also in charge of taking care of any magical disasters or problems in any of the other worlds. Much like Howl, Chrestomanci is full of charisma and is a wonderfully complex and interesting character. There were so many scenes I would have liked to sketched, but I picked this one as it created such a vivid and humorous scene in my head. This is Chrestomanci before he became Chrestomanci... and has to face up to the current Chrestomanci for continually using up his 9 lives... I still remember when he was about to be burnt to crisp from a dragon and all he could think of was that he was going to be scolded again...

Please let me know if you like this? I'm considering doing this as a habit for some of my favorite books and scenes within them. I'm such a bookworm...

you're welcome! she's my favorite author too. I found a review from some fan of hers that said "DWJ's novels are like a tonic - they come out of left field, are totally delightful, and make you feel, for at least a day or two, that there is some order in the unvierse"
which I think sums up my feelings for her books completely.

Thanks! And yeah, Gwendolen is on a whole new level of spoiled and deviousness. I liked her replacement self though if you haven't gotten that far. Glad you like this piece. ^^ I adore all the cat characters in Wynne's books.

yeah, Janet is ok, but my favorite character is Cat. He is hilarious. I am writing a book myself and the main characters are a girl named Sarah, and a travelling magician named Quill.

Janet is really clingy at first though...

looks like a go-to style for jules verns/ steam punk type images.

oh, know what would be funny? Drawing cartoon and anime characters in this style. Like things from the 80's to the present. The effect would be so jarring.

Just finished reading it. It was a fantastic book. DWJ writes children just right unlike a lot of supposedly realistic authors I don't care to mention.

your Gabriel De Witt is excellent! That is exactly what he looks like I'm sure.

I completely agree. Her children are so believable. Not necessarily good or bad just simply children living in the situations they are in. Each one is unique too. Even the cats DWJ rights about have strong personalities! =D
